Knapp leads Cognizant Classic after shooting first round 59

The opening round of the 2025 Cognizant Classic saw Jake Knapp set a blistering pace, firing a remarkable 12-under 59 to take a four-shot lead. Knapp’s bogey-free round on the par-71, 7,167-yard layout included an eagle on the par-5 10th and a flurry of birdies, showcasing exceptional ball-striking and putting on a course known for its difficulty, including the infamous “Bear Trap” (holes 15-17). His 59 marked a historic start to the Florida Swing, putting him ahead of a strong field of 144 players competing for a $9.2 million purse and 500 FedExCup points.
Behind Knapp, Matthieu Pavon posted a solid 8-under 63, placing him solo second, while Daniel Berger, Michael Kim, and Doug Ghim trailed at 7-under 64, tied for third. Defending champion Austin Eckroat began his title defense with a 5-under 66, sitting six shots back, alongside notable names like Jordan Spieth, who carded a 65 with seven birdies in his PGA National debut post-wrist surgery. Rickie Fowler and Russell Henley, grouped with Spieth, struggled comparatively, with Fowler at 1-under and Henley at even par. Shane Lowry, a betting favorite and South Florida resident, opened with a 4-under 67.
The Champion Course, with its Bermudagrass greens and water hazards on 15 holes, played slightly more scorable than usual under calm conditions, though the forecast hinted at breezier weather to come. The “Bear Trap” remained a stern test, historically averaging over par, but Knapp navigated it flawlessly. Coverage aired on PGA Tour Live via ESPN+ from 6:45 a.m. ET and Golf Channel from 2-6 p.m. ET, capturing the early fireworks of this ninth event in the 2025 season.
With the cut looming after Friday’s second round, Knapp’s explosive start set a high bar, while the chasing pack, including past champions and local favorites, geared up for a response on a layout that rarely yields low scores so easily.
